Meta Fired Employees for Misusing $25 Dinner Vouchers—Even One Making $400k!

So, here’s a wild story from Meta’s Los Angeles office. Last week, about two dozen employees got fired—over a $25 dinner voucher. Yeah, you read that right. And apparently, one of those employees made $400,000 a year!

Meta gives its employees meal credits: $20 for breakfast, $25 for lunch, and another $25 for dinner, all through apps like Grubhub or Uber Eats. The idea was to get your dinner delivered to the office if you had to work late. But some employees decided to get a bit creative with it. Instead of office dinners, they bought stuff like toothpaste and wine glasses. Others used the credits to get dinner delivered to their homes or pooled their vouchers for bigger buys.

The folks who got fired were reportedly doing this kind of thing routinely, while others who did it occasionally got off with just a reprimand. The employee who made $400,000 described the whole situation as "surreal" on an anonymous messaging platform. Imagine that—losing a high-paying job over a few dinners!

On top of that, Meta just launched another round of layoffs, affecting teams from Instagram, WhatsApp, and Reality Labs. It’s not clear exactly how many people were impacted this time around.

Interestingly, all this comes while Meta is actually doing pretty well financially. The company reported a 22% revenue growth, pulling in $39.07 billion in the second quarter. CEO Mark Zuckerberg sounded pretty upbeat on the earnings call, saying that they’re seeing “good growth” and even suggesting that Meta AI could become the most used AI assistant in the world by the end of the year.
